I am an avid world traveler and think I am fairly good at knowing many in and outs. However, I have never thought about long term travels and fixed income after quitting my job like these two authors did!I found tons of insight in the book on proper planning for simple things like vaccinations for countries I will be visiting. I learned my lesson on Visas for Brazil during the World Cup. Every story and idea they share is backed up by a great real life story or event. It made the reading fun and easy.
I was a fan of using ATMs for cash when I land in a country right in the airport for security (better than those currency exchange places for rates) but never thought of using some other areas. I have also learned that changing currency at hotels is usually a horrible rate and fee when you can walk a block away and find somewhere.
Overall thanks to them for sending this travel book over to a 1M mile traveler who still learned quite a few things. I have always wanted to do and have been long term planning an around the world trip and this had great tips for that too.

I love Kia Abdullah's writing and picked this book up despite the fact that I have no earthly prospects of traveling around the world in the near future (two children under 14, a serious chronic illness, and zero funding). I figured that I would have a pleasant skim through the pages while fantasizing about places I'd most likely never see in this lifetime. However, I found myself entranced by the writing, the sheer masses of useful information (especially regarding language learning), and the writers' practical approach to solving nearly every conceivable travel problem. While I hope my 50's will bring a return to travel and exploration I am almost more excited to give this book as a gift to my children when they are ready to hit the road...

A great travel guide for first time travellers full of real experiences and practical advice. I highly recommend first time travellers to purchase this as it will help you to plan and prepare for your adventures.

This is a super-useful guide for anyone planning a long-term trip. It offers plenty of tangible advice (e.g. a budget formula for working out how much to save, a list of everything you need to pack) interweaved with funny insights into the authors' own travel mishaps and experiences. Much of the advice can be applied to everyday life too (e.g. how to talk to strangers, how to avoid burnout) so it proves its worth even after you've returned.
This book is full of great tips for the round-the-world traveler. I gave it four stars instead of five because it's sanctimonious at times, for instance recommending that you save the environment by not traveling by car, but only after spending chapters describing how fly around the world--lol--not exactly light on the carbon footprint. Sometimes this tone made me laugh though too "If you travel with a guitar, you'll look like a douche....Just don't do it. The same goes for a ukulele. In fact, let's just throw in all string-based instruments in there, shall we?" Overall a good little book!
